Recognizing Depression in Men

Did you know that men are equally as likely as women to experience depression as women, although men are less likely to seek help for it? This is due, in part, to social and cultural stereotypes about masculinity that lead many men to believe that they must "tough it out" or "be strong" instead of talking about their experience.

We believe this mindset harms both men and women. It is important to start by recognizing the barriers to seeking help for depression and then discuss the different signs and symptoms of depression that men may experience.

Anxiety: Men who are depressed often feel anxious and worry constantly. They may have trouble sleeping or experience restlessness, leading to fatigue and exhaustion. Anxiety can be experienced as a more "heady" experience or may be experienced somatically (in the body). Learn more here.

Low energy: Many individuals claim to have low energy or poor sleep, but did you know this is a common sign of depression? Men who are depressed may feel constantly tired or exhausted, regardless of how much rest they get. They may also have trouble motivating themselves to do the things they used to enjoy.

Anger: Depression in men can also present as anger or irritability. Sociologists hypothesize this is because anger is a more socially acceptable emotion to display rather than confusion, hurt or angst. Men who are depressed may snap at loved ones or lash out in fits of rage, which can damage their relationships and increase feelings of guilt.

Brain fog: It can be incredibly frustrating not to think clearly when you feel the pressure to perform. Men with depression may struggle with brain fog, which makes it difficult to think clearly, remember things, or make decisions. This can lead to increased feelings of confusion, frustration, and hopelessness.

Weight gain: Depression, hormones and weight gain are all closely linked. Men with depression may turn to food for comfort, leading to weight gain. They may also neglect their health, stop exercising, and develop unhealthy eating habits.

Poor relationships: Depression can negatively effect a man's relationships with others, causing them to withdraw or push others away. This can lead to increased feelings of isolation and loneliness, making the depression worse. Couples counseling for men can help, but so can individual counseling.

How Therapy Helps Depression

The Role of Human Connection in Depression Therapy Treatment

The first step in understanding the mindset that creates depressive symptoms is through human connection with a therapist. Interesting, right? Depression can be both genetic, but one of the most prominent features of depression is also lonliness. Developing rapport and trust with a therapist can ease depressive symptoms right of the bat. Depression therapy treatment is crucial in this process.

Therapists are trained professionals who can provide individuals with the emotional support while also incorporating guidance. Talking to someone who understands and empathizes with what you are going through can help alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness. Human connection can provide the support necessary to encourage individuals to reach out for help.

The Importance of Vulnerability in Men's Therapy

Vulnerability is a tough thing for men. Many men tend to associate vulnerability with weakness, making it difficult for them to open up and express their emotions. However, vulnerability is an important aspect of combating depression. When individuals allow themselves to be vulnerable, they become more aware of their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. This awareness allows them to address their issues more effectively in therapy for men.

Emotional Expression in Depression Therapy

Emotional expression is a vital component in managing depression. Suppressing emotions and feelings can make the symptoms of depression worse. A therapist can help individuals learn how to express their emotions in healthy and constructive ways. Therapists use a variety of techniques to encourage individuals to express themselves, such as writing, drawing, or role-playing. By engaging in these activities, individuals should experience less severe symptoms and an overall improvement in mood.
